What is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) therapy is a transformative approach to healing trauma and overcoming distressing life experiences. It involves a structured process that utilizes bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements, to help the brain reprocess memories and alleviate emotional distress associated with traumatic events.

EMDR is not just about talking; it taps into your brain’s natural healing mechanisms to promote lasting recovery and emotional well-being.

What is EMDR Therapy Used to Treat?

EMDR therapy can help with:

  • PTSD: Relieves symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder.
  • Anxiety: Manages panic attacks, phobias, and generalized anxiety.
  • Depression: Addresses depressive symptoms linked to past traumas.
  • Substance Abuse: Helps confront underlying causes of addiction.
  • Eating Disorders: Aids in resolving trauma-related issues with food and body image.
  • Low Self-Esteem: Boosts self-confidence by challenging negative beliefs.

These concerns stem from distressing memories, and EMDR’s techniques facilitate natural healing without relying solely on talk therapy or medication. You can read more about how EMDR can help you here.

How does EMDR work?

During an EMDR session, you’ll engage in sets of bilateral stimulation (eye movements or self-tapping) while recalling target memories. This process helps to reprocess these memories, allowing you to integrate them more adaptively and reduce their emotional charge.

Over time, you’ll experience relief from symptoms and a greater sense of empowerment over your thoughts and emotions. You can read more about how EMDR works here.

This is what one client recently shared about her EMDR Therapy:

It was with EMDR that I found huge benefits, just incredible how the process works. Honni is a wonderful practitioner guiding me through some very difficult traumatic events. I put in the hard work, to face the difficult events that had, at times, defined and almost destroyed me.

I found my voice, my self worth and self respect. I have removed toxic people and situations from my life. Relationships that had previously caused me stress, pain and eroded my sense of self have been redefined and clear boundaries put in place.

In a nutshell, Honni (and she won’t like me saying this) saved me. Talking to someone kind in a safe space was incredibly freeing. EMDR was very effective, under Honni’s direction I re-framed a lifetime of hurts and trauma.

How EMDR Therapy Helped Georgia Rebuild Her Life After an Abusive Relationship

Georgia had been in a relationship with a man who continually put her down with criticism and name calling. His drinking had increased, and he had cheated on her several times. She had taken him back each time in the hope that this time he would treat her right and stay faithful. Then she found out she was pregnant.

Georgia’s partner didn’t want the baby and pressured her to have an abortion. When she refused, he kicked her out of their apartment, and she went to live with her parents again. After the baby was born her partner convinced her to go back to him and because she wanted her baby boy to have his dad in his life, she went back.

The drinking, verbal abuse and cheating continued but Georgia stayed, always hoping it would improve. In fact, it got worse and one night he even brought another woman home to their bed and raged at Georgia when she protested.

FAQs about EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing):

What is EMDR therapy, and how does it work?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy is a psychotherapy approach used to treat trauma, PTSD, and other distressing experiences. It involves a structured eight-phase protocol that incorporates bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements, taps, or sounds) to help process and reframe traumatic memories, reducing their emotional charge and associated symptoms.

Is EMDR therapy effective?

Yes, EMDR therapy is widely recognised as an effective treatment for trauma-related disorders, including PTSD. Numerous studies have demonstrated its efficacy in reducing symptoms and improving overall well-being. However, individual responses to therapy may vary, and it’s essential to work with a qualified therapist to determine the best approach for your unique needs.

How long does EMDR therapy take?

The duration of EMDR therapy varies depending on factors such as the nature and severity of the trauma, the individual’s readiness to engage in therapy and the specific treatment goals. Some individuals may experience significant relief after just a few sessions, while others may require more extensive treatment over several months.

What can I expect during an EMDR therapy session?

During an EMDR therapy session, you will work collaboratively with your therapist to identify target memories or experiences to process. You will then engage in bilateral stimulation, typically through following the therapist’s hand movements or using self-tapping, while simultaneously focusing on the targeted memory. Throughout the session, your therapist will guide you through the processing and help you manage any emotions or sensations that arise.

Is EMDR therapy suitable for everyone?

While EMDR therapy can be highly effective for many individuals, it may not be suitable for everyone. Certain conditions, such as dissociative disorders or severe mental health conditions, may require additional assessment and consideration before beginning EMDR therapy. It’s essential to consult with a qualified therapist who can evaluate your specific needs and determine the most appropriate treatment approach for you.

Are there any side effects of EMDR therapy?

While EMDR therapy is generally considered safe, some individuals may experience temporary increases in distress or emotional arousal during or after sessions. This is a normal part of the processing and typically subsides as therapy progresses. Your therapist will work closely with you to ensure your safety and provide support as needed throughout the treatment process.

How do I find a qualified EMDR therapist?

To ensure you receive safe and effective EMDR therapy, it’s crucial to work with a therapist who has received specialised training and certification in EMDR. As an accredited practitioner with EMDRAA (EMDR Association of Australia), I offer expertise and experience in delivering EMDR therapy. You can reach out to me directly for a consultation.
